Many of you believe the 2-Series Active Tourer to be sacrilege. Maybe, maybe not, but a company's got to make money. In the case of the Active Tourer, BMW is offering up a small car competitor in the "premium compact class." According to the folks in Munich:
In order to meet the highest standards in terms of spaciousness, variability and functionality, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has a cutting-edge front-wheel-drive system. Engines with three or four cylinders promise the driving pleasure and exemplary efficiency for which BMW is renowned.
The three cylinder isn't really news, it's found in Mini Cooper offerings and even the i8. The premium compact will be available not only in Front Wheel Drive, but also BMW's XDrive All Wheel Drive system. But this car will not see America any time soon according to BMW North America. Neither will it replace the X1. It appears the X1 will be the only "1-series" BMW available in the US.
I guess this means you won't see an Active Tourer gracing the slopes in Colorado or Utah any time soon.

That's too bad, this coming from an owner of several BMWs in the past that now drives a minivan. I was really looking forward to this one as it seemed to be something different from them, yet (relatively) affordable, and not another ugly, godforsaken SAV/CUV/SUV/XYZ or dreadful GT variation. Sure, BMW occasionally does different (i3, i8, clown shoe), but those are a bit too dear for my budget these days. I was hoping to see what BMW was capable of when it comes to FWD dynamics, but I guess I'll just have to check out a Mini for that.
